On February 26, 2020, Judge John A. Kronstadt of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California appointed BFA Partner Lesley Weaver to the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for the multidistrict litigation In re ZF-TRW Airbag Control Units Products Liability Litigation.

“I am looking forward to furthering the prosecution of this case and am happy to be serving aside such a talented group of litigators,” says Ms. Weaver.  

The case concerns over 12 million cars sold with allegedly defective airbag control units (ACUs). The defect, which may prevent airbags from inflating in the event of crash,  has been linked to four deaths and six serious injuries. The case concerns cars manufactured by six different automakers: Fiat Chrysler, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi and Toyota, model years 2012 through 2017. 

Ms. Weaver has extensive experience bringing cases against auto manufacturers for selling cars that do not conform to the representations made at the time of sale. Ms. Weaver has served on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for In re Volkswagen “Clean Diesel” Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litig., MDL No. 2672 CRB (JSC) (“VW Emissions”) which has recovered over $15 billion in settlements – the largest automotive class action recovery in history. She also served on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee In re Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep EcoDiesel Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability, No. 3:17-md-02777 (N.D. Cal.) which resulted in a settlement of $307.5 million.
